Right for AccountantsHow to Evaluate Merchant Account Providers

Consider your expectations for merchant account pricing, and focus on cost and features. Many services levy a standard charge for all features, some of which, you won't use.

  • Most accountants key in transactions because they are paid from an invoice, not face-to-face with customers. In this case, focus on the keyed or mid-qualified rate, and not the swipe rate.
  • You don't need an expensive terminal if you take face-to-face payment from your customers and are not swiping the card. Key the card number into your PC to process the transaction.
  • If you want to swipe cards, our optional $89 card reader is a cost effective alternative to a terminal.
  • If your clients' customers want to pay online, they will need their online transactions linked to their merchant account. QuickBooks Merchant Service for PCs (see Billing Solutions) offers accountants this connection for Free with QuickBooks Billing Solutions.
  • Read the fine print for annual contracts or large cancellation fees.
  • Avoid charge-back fees and funds-not-available fees by accurately managing your transactions.

  1. QuickBooks Billing Solutions is required to e-mail invoices enabled for online payment. Separate sign-up and additional fees apply. Internet access required. Some Billing Solutions features are not activated for invoices sent via U.S. mail. Transaction fees still apply for mailed invoices and online payment options.
  2. Qualified Rate requires optional card reader; sold separately. Qualified Rate of 1.72% will be charged on all qualified Visa/MC/Discover Network transactions that are electronically authorized. Manually keyed Visa/MC/Discover Network transactions that have AVS will be charged a Mid-Qualified Rate of 2.44%. All Visa/MC/Discover Network transactions that do not meet the requirements stated above, business cards, foreign cards and transactions that do not meet Visa/MC/Discover Network requirements for the best interchange program will be charged a Non-Qualified Rate of 3.27%. Different discount rates for American Express and JCB cards may apply.
  3. Funds generally are deposited into your account within 2-3 business days depending on your financial institution and your Demand Deposit Account. Clearance time for funds may vary depending on your Demand Deposit Account.
